Financial Instruments

  • A financial instrument is a formal contract between two parties that can be created, traded, modified, and settled
  • Financial instruments are the primary means to exchange money within the market
  • Stocks: Capital raised by a business through issuing shares
  • Shares: Individual pieces of a company you own outright — no expiration date
  • Options: Contracts that bet on the underlying stock's price direction — have expiration dates
  • Call: Bets the stock price goes UP
  • Put: Bets the stock price goes DOWN

---

Stock Market Terminology

| Term | Definition | Trading Implication | |------|-----------|-------------------| | Bullish / Bull | Belief price will go UP (bull strikes upward) | Go long, buy calls | | Bearish / Bear | Belief price will go DOWN (bear strikes downward) | Go short, buy puts | | Day Trade | Buy and sell within same trading day (9:30 AM - 4:00 PM EST) | No overnight risk | | Swing Trade | Hold position overnight or longer | Exposed to after-hours events | | Long | Bullish position — expecting price rise | Profit from upward movement | | Short | Bearish position — expecting price fall | Profit from downward movement | | Volume | Total shares/contracts traded in a given period | Measures demand and conviction |

Broker Comparison

| Broker | Account Min | Stock Commission | Options Commission | Best For | |--------|------------|-----------------|-------------------|----------| | TD Ameritrade (thinkorswim) | $0 | $0 | $0.65/contract | Best platform, free mobile app | | Lightspeed | Varies | Low | Low | Active day traders (instructor's choice) | | Interactive Brokers | Varies | Low | Low | Professional traders | | Webull | $0 | $0 | $0 | Beginners, commission-free | | Robinhood | $0 | $0 | $0 | Beginners, simplicity |

Support & Resistance Framework

Support (Floor):

  • A wall of pending buyers that holds up a declining stock price
  • Stocks bounce off support levels
  • If broken → old support becomes NEW RESISTANCE (role reversal)
  • Strongest at whole numbers (e.g., $50, $100, $200)

Resistance (Ceiling):

  • A wall of pending sellers that caps a rising stock price
  • Stocks reject from resistance levels
  • If broken → old resistance becomes NEW SUPPORT (role reversal)
  • Strongest at whole numbers

Breakout: Price moves through resistance with volume → bullish continuation Breakdown: Price moves through support with volume → bearish continuation

Candlestick Anatomy

Every candlestick shows 4 data points for its timeframe: Open, Close, High, Low

  • Real Body: Thick colored part = difference between Open and Close
  • Upper Shadow (Wick): Thin line above body = High price reached
  • Lower Shadow (Wick): Thin line below body = Low price reached
  • Timeframe Rule: Each candle = one unit of the selected timeframe (1min, 5min, 15min, hourly, daily, weekly)

Green Candle (Bullish): Close > Open → price increased during period

  • Open at bottom of body, Close at top

Red Candle (Bearish): Close < Open → price decreased during period

  • Open at top of body, Close at bottom

Reading Wicks: Long wicks = rejection at that price level. Small body = indecision.

Chart Pattern Taxonomy

Reversal Patterns (Trend is ending, direction will change)

| Pattern | Prior Trend | Signal | |---------|------------|--------| | Double Top | Bullish → Bearish | Two peaks at same level | | Head & Shoulders | Bullish → Bearish | Three peaks, middle highest | | Rising Wedge | Bullish → Bearish | Converging higher highs/lows, breaks down | | Double Bottom | Bearish → Bullish | Two troughs at same level | | Inverse Head & Shoulders | Bearish → Bullish | Three troughs, middle lowest | | Falling Wedge | Bearish → Bullish | Converging lower highs/lows, breaks up |

Continuation Patterns (Temporary pause, trend resumes)

| Pattern | Trend Context | Signal | |---------|--------------|--------| | Falling Wedge (in uptrend) | Bullish | Pause then continue up | | Bullish Rectangle | Bullish | Consolidation between parallel lines | | Bullish Pennant | Bullish | Small triangle after sharp up move | | Rising Wedge (in downtrend) | Bearish | Pause then continue down | | Bearish Rectangle | Bearish | Consolidation between parallel lines | | Bearish Pennant | Bearish | Small triangle after sharp down move |

Bilateral Patterns (Can break EITHER direction — wait for confirmation)

| Pattern | Shape | Key Rule | |---------|-------|----------| | Ascending Triangle | Flat top, rising bottom | Can break up OR down | | Descending Triangle | Flat bottom, falling top | Can break up OR down | | Symmetrical Triangle | Converging upper and lower lines | Can break up OR down |

Critical: Majority of bilateral patterns form triangles. NEVER enter before breakout confirmation.

Trends & Multi-Timeframe Analysis

  • Trend: The general direction of a stock's movement via swing highs and swing lows
  • Uptrend: Series of higher highs and higher lows
  • Downtrend: Series of lower highs and lower lows
  • Sideways/Range: No clear directional pattern

Multi-Timeframe Rule: Analyze higher timeframes for direction, lower timeframes for entries. Different trading styles use different timeframes — scalpers use 1-5min, day traders 5-15min, swing traders hourly-daily.

---

Momentum Trading

  • Momentum = rate of change of price with respect to time
  • Strong Momentum: Large price move in short time (steep slope) — PREFERRED for day trading
  • Weak Momentum: Small price move over long time (shallow slope) — avoid for day trading
  • What to look for: Stocks making $10+ moves in 20 minutes vs $5 moves in 60 minutes
  • Application: Seek breakouts, bounces, and rejects on strong momentum stocks

---

Technical Indicators

Overlays (plotted ON the price chart)

  • Bollinger Bands: Volatility measure — squeeze signals upcoming breakout, band walk signals strong trend
  • Moving Averages: Trend direction and dynamic support/resistance

Oscillators (plotted BELOW the price chart)

  • MACD (Moving Average Converge & Diverge):
  • USE ONLY ON DAILY CHART (instructor's strict rule)
  • Buy signal: fast line (green) crosses ABOVE slow line (red)
  • Sell signal: fast line (green) crosses BELOW slow line (red)
  • Shows "Overbought" and "Oversold" conditions

---

Volume & Breakout Rules

The Golden Rule: **NO VOLUME, NO TRADE**

Volume = demand = strength behind a price move. Without high volume, no signal is reliable.

Volume Calculation: Every buy AND every sell counts (10 shares bought + 10 sold = 20 volume)

Volume-Trend Strength Matrix

| Price Direction | Volume Direction | Signal | |----------------|-----------------|--------| | UP | UP | Strong Uptrend — high conviction buying | | UP | DOWN | Weak Uptrend — losing momentum, potential reversal | | DOWN | UP | Strong Downtrend — high conviction selling | | DOWN | DOWN | Weak Downtrend — selling pressure drying up |

Breakout Confirmation

  • A breakout at support or resistance is ONLY valid with high volume confirmation
  • Check volume on BOTH the underlying stock AND the option contracts
  • Low-volume breakouts are traps — do not enter

Application to Prediction Markets

These traditional market frameworks directly enhance prediction market analysis:

  • Support/Resistance → Contract price floors/ceilings on Polymarket/Kalshi
  • Volume analysis → Liquidity assessment and conviction measurement
  • Momentum → Directional bias and timing of entries/exits
  • Chart patterns → Price action patterns on contract price history
  • Multi-timeframe → Short-term contract scalping vs longer-duration holds
  • NO VOLUME NO TRADE → Aligns with Rohan's minimum volume filter (200+ contracts)
